Chauncey Packer

American tenor Chauncey Packer is an exciting talent on the stages of opera houses in Europe and the United States.  He has recently performed the roles of Amon AKHNATEN with Atlanta Opera, Edmondo MANON LESCAUT with Shreveport Opera and Remendado CARMEN with New Orleans Opera.   In past seasons he performed the roles of Alfredo LA TRAVIATA with Pensacola Opera, Rodolfo LA BOHEME with Mobile Opera, and both Arturo LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR and Steuerman DIE FLIEGENDER HOLLÄNDER  with New Orleans Opera. Mr. Packer is also one of the most in-demand artists for his captivating portrayal of Sportin' Life PORGY AND BESS. Following his debut of this role with Atlanta Opera, a reviewer proclaimed, "Here Chauncey Packer was the complete entertainer." (The Atlanta Journal).  He will reprise the role with the company again in the 2010-2011 season.  Last season, he made his San Francisco Opera debut as Sportin' Life to rave reviews, and he has also performed the role with Mobile Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, Tulsa Opera and this season in many major European cities with the Munich-based New York Harlem Productions tour, with whom he has also performed in Japan.  Mr. Packer performed with an additional tour of PORGY AND BESS with the Opéra Comique where he sang Mingo and covered Sportin' Life in Paris, Caen, and Luxembourg.  A recent concert performance of the same work with the Nashville Symphony, conducted by John Mauceri, was recorded and released on the Decca label.

In addition to the companies already mentioned, Mr. Packer has also performed with the Utah Festival Opera, Opera Grand Rapids, Des Moines Metro Opera and LSU Opera, where his roles have included Pinkerton MADAMA BUTTERFLY, the title role in WERTHER, Pong TURANDOT, Sam SUSANNAH, Ruggero LA RONDINE, Dr. Blind DIE FLEDERMAUS, Tamino DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, Larry/Matt THE FACE ON THE BARROOM FLOOR, Arturo LUCIA DI LAMMERMOOR and Beppe PAGLIACCI.

He has also performed concerts with Edmonton Opera, Baton Rouge Symphony, Mobile Symphony, Gulf Coast Opera, Shreveport Opera and Pensacola Symphony, in such works as Haydn Mass in C Major, Beethoven Ninth Symphony, Bruckner Te Deum, Schubert Mass in G Major and Handel Messiah.

Mr. Packer has been involved with outreach programs for Mobile Opera and Pensacola Opera and has participated in young artist programs with Utah Festival Opera and Des Moines Metro Opera. He has been the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the Huel Perkins Fellowship at Louisiana State University for his doctoral studies. He has won several vocal competitions including National Associations of Teacher's Singing Competition, Rose Palmai-Tenser Competition, Shreveport Singer of the Year, and was a finalist in Ducrest International Competition. He placed several times in the regional finals of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and in 2005, won at the regional level and was a national semi-finalist.

Chauncey Packer is originally from southern Alabama where he received his undergraduate degree from University of Mobile and his master's degree in music from University of New Orleans where he makes his home. During the upcoming 2010-2011 season, Mr. Packer will perform the role of Monostatos THE MAGIC FLUTE with New Orleans Opera, and he will reprise his portrayal of Sportin' Life PORGY AND BESS with New Orleans in October of 2010.
