Doug Jones

With over ninety roles in over seventy operas, American tenor Doug Jones has proven himself to be one of the most versatile character tenors performing today. His repertoire embraces all styles from Monteverdi to premieres of new works by composers such as Gyorgi Ligeti, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Luca Lombardi and Tobias Picker. New roles recently performed include Harlekin in Ullman's KAISER VON ATLANTIS, Man with the Donkey in Orff's DIE KLUGE and Schoolmaster/Mosquito in Janacek's CUNNING LITTLE VIXEN, all with Long Beach Opera. Recent highlights include his debut with the Pittsburgh Opera as Bardolfo FALSTAFF, a return to Arizona for First Jew SALOME, as well as Spoletta TOSCA with Kansas City Lyric, Monostatos DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE in Bordeaux and a production of BRIGADOON, where he played Charlie Dalrymple.

In the U.S., Mr. Jones has performed with Seattle Opera, San Francisco Opera, Los Angeles Opera, San Diego Opera, Michigan Opera Theater, Dallas Opera, Austin Lyric Opera, Opera Arizona, Opera Colorado, Baltimore Lyric Opera, Hawaii Opera Theatre, the Los Angeles Philharmonic (Hollywood Bowl), the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra, and the Bard Festival. Internationally, he has appeared in many European houses including Opera Bastille, Royal Opera Covent Garden, Grand Theatre de Geneva, Teatro Liceu in Barcelona, Oper Frankfurt, Opera de Bordeaux, Netherlands Opera, Vienna Opera Theater, Stadtteater Basel, Opera Toulouse and New Israeli Opera Tel Aviv. He also appeared with the summer festivals of Salzburg, Bregenz, Innsbruck, St. Sebastian (Spain), Batignano (Italy) and Aix-en-Provence.

Last season, Mr. Jones returned to the Seattle Opera for Dr. Caius FALSTAFF, and Monostatos DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, as well he returned to Toulouse as Monostatos DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE; Shabby Peasant LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK in Tel Aviv and  returned to Lyric Opera of Kansas City for Remendado CARMEN. Upcoming this season he will return to Kansas Lyric Opera as Goro MADAME BUTTERFLY.  In addition he will be singing 1st Philistine SAMSON AND DELILAH with San Diego Opera.  In 2014 he will be reprising the role of Spoletta TOSCA with Austin Lyric Opera.

A house favorite with the Seattle Opera, Mr. Jones has performed a variety of roles including Valzacchi DER ROSENKAVALIER, Borsa RIGOLETTO, Edmondo/Dancing Master MANON LESCAUT, and Tanzmeister ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, as well as roles in TRISTAN UND ISOLDE, DIE ZAUBERFLÖTE, BORIS GODUNOV, EUGENE ONEGIN and PARSIFAL. He made his debut with the Royal Opera Covent Garden as Tobias SWEENEY TODD, and debuted in Vienna as Sesto GIULIO CESARE in the Wiener Musikverein. In addition, Mr. Jones has frequently performed with the Wiener Operntheater, which presents 20th century operas in Vienna, in the title role in Werner Egk's THE REVISOR, as well as the title role in the Austrian Premiere of Birtwistle's SECOND MRS. KONG, and the Austrian premieres of Ligeti's THE GRAND MACABRE (Piet vom Faß) and Penderecki's THE DEVILS OF LOUDON.

Additional noted engagements in the U.S. include DIE MEISTERSINGER and FALSTAFF for San Francisco Opera, Pedrillo DIE ENTFÜHRUNG AUS DEM SERAIL and the world premiere of Picker's FANTASTIC MR. FOX with the Los Angeles Opera, Kudrjasch KATYA KABANOVA with San Diego Opera, Pytor Fedorevitch/Colonel in Shostakovich's THE NOSE with the Bard Festival, Spoletta TOSCA with Austin Lyric Opera, and Matt/Flich/Street Singer/Messanger THREEPENNY OPERA with Arizona Opera. Noted international engagements include appearances with the New Israeli Opera for L'INCORONAZIONE DI POPPEA, FALSTAFF and BARTERED BRIDE, as well as LA TRAVIATA and A MIDSUMMER NIGHT'S DREAM for the Opera de Bordeaux, Junge Diener ELEKTRA in Amsterdam, LADY MACBETH OF MTSENSK and the world premiere of Karetnikov's TILL EULENSPIEGEL for Opera Nantes, and frequent appearances at the Opera Bastille, including the Novice in Francesca Zambello's widely praised production of BILLY BUDD, RIGOLETTO, TURANDOT, DER ROSENKAVALIER and most recently, the new Robert Wilson production of FRAU OHNE SCHATTEN.

He has collaborated with such notable stage directors as David Alden, Chris Alexander, Michael Hampe, Bernard Uzan, Andreas Homoki, Hans-Peter Lehman, Lotfi Mansouri, Gian Carlo Menotti, Harold Prince, Jerome Savary, Herbert Wernicke, Robert Wilson and Francesca Zambello. Notable conductors include Maurizio Arena, Maurizio Benini, Richard Buckley, Sylvain Cambreling, Frederic Chaslin, James Conlon, John Fiore, Asher Fisch, Graeme Jenkins, Armin Jordan, Stefan Lano, Fabio Luisi, Lorin Maazel, George Manahan, John Mauceri, Georges Pretre, Nicola Rescigno, Julius Rudel, Donald Runnicles, Ulf Schirmer, Gerald Schwarz, Robert Spano, David Stern, and Edo de Waart.

He can be heard on the premiere recording of the opera DIE MENSCHEN on the Wergo label by Detlev Mueller-Siemens. Upcoming enagements includea return seasons at Lyric Opera of Kansas City as Goro MADAMA BUTTERFLY, San Diego Opera as First Philistine SAMSON ET DALILAH and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden for Pong TURANDOT and Junge Diener ELEKTRA.
