Timothy Redmond

"The big pleasure of the night rests with the conductor Timothy Redmond and the Southbank Sinfonia....... exhilarating fizz, exactness and stamina." Geoff Brown The Times  June 13, 2008.  Timothy Redmond is a young British conductor with a particular flair for contemporary music.  In 2007, he made his debut at St Petersburg's Mariinsky Theatre, conducting the Russian premiere of Thomas Adès' opera POWDER HER FACE.  The event was filmed for Russian TV, and Redmond was immediately re-engaged by Valery Gergiev to conduct the opera in the 2008 Stars of the White Nights Festival.  Last season he conducted POWDER HER FACE in a new production for the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, the revival of which he  conducts in 2010.

His association with the music of Thomas Adès led to him assisting the composer at the Royal Opera House for the world premiere of THE TEMPEST, assisting on the French premiere in Strasbourg and revising the vocal score for FABER MUSIC (published 2007).  Other recent engagements include debuts at the Wexford Festival (Ireland) conducting Kurt Weill DER SILBERSEE and Haydn DIE SCHÖPFUNG; at Bregenz (Austria) with Richard Ayres THE CRICKET RECOVERS; and with the Northern Sinfonia at the Sage Gateshead (UK).

Recent seasons have included regular concerts with the Manchester Camerata, Northern Sinfonia, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra and Cambridge Philharmonic; a New York workshop on THE GOLDEN TICKET (to be perfomed in 2010 at the Opera Theatre of St Louis);  conducting the Sarajevo Philharmonic at Bosnia Herzegovina; and recording a new CD with the French cellist Ophèlie Gaillard for Naïve Records (RPO). His  debut with the Oulu Sinfonietta in 2009 was followed by a reinvitation and he will conduct a series of performances with the London Symphony Orchestra in the 2010/2011 season.

 Timothy Redmond was appointed Principal Conductor of the Cambridge Philharmonic in 2005.  The past three seasons have seen critically-acclaimed performances in Cambridge, a sold-out performance in Prague's Rudolfinum Hall and radio and TV broadcasts of their CD with British composer Ryan Teague (Type Records).

He has conducted concerts with many of the UK's other leading orchestras, including the  PHilharmonia, London Symphony Orchestra (LSO), Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, the Ulster and BBC Philharmonic Orchestras, Sinfonia Viva, City of Oxford Orchestra, and the Orchestra of Opera North. 

Overseas he has conducted concerts in Belgium (Brussels), Czech Republic (Prague, Cesky Krumlov), France (Paris, Martel), Holland (Maastricht), Italy (Montepulciano, Walton Foundation, Ischia), South Africa (Cape Town) and the USA (Los Angeles, West Chester, Kennedy Center, Washington).  Mr. Redmond also toured Estonia in 2005 with the Symphony Orchestra of the Vanumuise Opera (Tartu, Parnu, Tallinn).

He has conducted opera productions for Opera North (Mozart DON GIOVANNI); Tenerife Opera (Rachmaninov THE MISERLY KNIGHT, Puccini GIANNI SCHICCHI and Bizet CARMEN); English Touring Opera (Mozart MAGIC FLUTE, Donizetti DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT and Bizet CARMEN); Opera Theatre Europe at the ROH Linbury (UK premiere of Tobias Picker THERESE RAQUIN); Almeida Opera (world premiere of Raymond Yiu THE ORIGINAL CHINESE CONJUROR); for the Covent Garden  Festival (DAUGHTER OF THE REGIMENT, Handel CLORI, TIRSI E FILENO); Buxton Festival (Menotti THE MEDIUM); UKLA Festival in Los Angeles (Barber A HAND OF BRIDGE); and Aldeburgh Festival (THE ORIGINAL CHINESE CONJUROR).  For the Royal Northern College of Music he has conducted productions of Britten THE TURN OF THE SCREW, PHAEDRA, AND ALBERT HERRING; Tchaikovsky ORLEANSKAYA DYEVA; and Donizetti ROBERTO DEVEREUX.  He is currently working on Kaija Saariaho AMOUR DE LOIN at English National Opera.

Timothy Redmond spent several seasons on the music staff at De Vlaamse Opera (Britten BILLY BUDD, Belgian premieres of Jonathan Dove FLIGHT and Thomas Adès POWDER HER FACE) and Garsington Opera (Rossini L'ITALIANA IN ALGERI; Mozart MAGIC FLUTE and LE NOZZE DI FIGARO; Haydn IL MONDO DELLA LUNA; Strauss INTERMEZZO and DIE LIEBE DER DANAE; and Schumann GENOVEVA).

He also assisted on productions at Glyndebourne (Dove FLIGHT), Brighton Festival (Ferrero LA FIGLIA DEL MAGO), Mecklenburgh Opera (Julian Grant JUMP INTO MY SACK and Judith Weir THE CONSOLATIONS OF SCHOLARSHIP) and Montepulciano Festival (Italian premiere of Detlev Glanert LEYLA E MEDJNUN).

He has arranged and orchestrated music for dozens of orchestras and soloists including Natalie Clein, Natasha Marsh, Amici, Manchester Camerata, Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, Prime Brass and Warwick University.  His arrangements have been heard in Australia, New Zealand, the United States, South Africa, Czech Republic, India, Italy, Finland and throughout Scandinavia.  He has been published by Chester Music, Youngsong Music, New Playwrights Network and has arranged the music for over a dozen plays and musicals.

He broadcasts regularly on BBC radio and TV and has made CD recordings for EMI with Natasha Marsh, Mara Carlyle and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra.  He recently finished a new recording with the Northern Sinfonia Orchestra and was assistant conductor for the Chandos recording of Verdi AIDA.

Timothy Redmond read music at Manchester University and studied the oboe at the Royal Northern College of Music.  He later held the RNCM's Junior Fellowship in Conducting and furthered his studies in masterclasses with Yan Pascal Tortelier, Ilya Musin, George Hurst and Pierre Boulez.

Awards include 1st prize in the Allianz Cornhill Conducting Competition (1992), finalist in the BBC Young Conductors' Competition (1998) and 3rd prize in the Donatella Flick Conducting Competition (2000).  He was awarded a scholarship to further his studies by the Countess of Munster Musical Trust (1993) and was recognized by the Samuel Barber Foundation in America for conducting Barber's music in his hometown of West Chester, Pennsylvania.
