A versatile conductor, Alice Farnham is equally at home conducting opera, ballet, choral and orchestral repertoire. Having trained under Ilya Musin at the St. Petersburg State Conservatory, she enjoys a growing reputation both in the UK and abroad.
Alice has conducted Die Zauberflöte for Singapore Lyric Opera, Falstaff for Grange Park Opera 'Rising Stars', I Capuleti e I Montecchi for Pimlico Opera, Le Pescatrice for Bampton Classical Opera, A Midsummer Night's Dream for English Touring Opera, Carmen for London City Opera, and Il Barbiere di Siviglia for British Youth Opera. Since 2005 Alice has regularly worked as a member of the Music Staff at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, and prior to that on the full-time music staff of Gothenburg Opera, Sweden. In 2011 she was Assistant Conductor for Welsh National Opera on Turandot and in 2012 on Béatrice & Bénédict.
She has been a regular Guest Conductor at Birmingham Royal Ballet since 2008 and has also conducted English National Ballet and Rambert Dance Company.
She has conducted Gisellefor the Danish Royal Ballet, and the National Theatre of Slovenia, Maribor. At the Royal Ballet Covent Garden, she conducted Giselle in the main house, and at the Linbury Theatre conductedNew Works which included the premiere of Graham Fitkin's Reel which won the Stage Works category for the British Composers Awards 2009.
Alice Farnham was Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the Borås Symphony Orchestra, Sweden from 2004-2007. She has also recently conducted the Brighton Philharmonic, South Bank Sinfonia, Chandos Symphony Orchestra, and Oxford Chamber Orchestra.
An experienced conductor of youth and community groups, Alice recently conducted a large-scale community opera by Martin Read for the Anvil Arts, Basingstoke. In 2012 she will lead another youth project for the Anvil Arts and also will conduct David Bedford's The Wreck of the Titanic for Cumbria Music Service.
Alice began her musical career at as an Organist, holding and Organ Scholarships at St. Hugh's College, Oxford University and at St. Thomas' Church, Fifth Avenue, New York. Early in her career, she was Music Director of St. Stephen's Church, Walbrook and St. Mary's Church, Bryanston Square, and conducted many choirs in London. She also held a Conducting Bursary with Brighton Festival Chorus.
A versatile performer, Alice is playing the piano for a 2011-12 UK tour of Turn Back the Clock - A Homage to Joyce Grenfell. She is also sought after as a vocal coach and recently gave some master classes in Singapore.
